Oakland seeks historic home sweep over Boston

Boston is slowly but surely fading in the East division and they are now trailing the leading Toronto by eight points. Despite having one of the best offensives among all teams in the American League, the Red Sox are struggling with a negative record and would need to score 18 more runs without conceding one just breakeven. Overall, things are clearly not going their way as they are on the verge of losing a fourth consecutive match to Oakland, which would also result in a sweep.

The A’s have the best record in major league baseball, but they had a hard time sweeping the Red Sox, with the last event of this type happening more than four decades ago. Winning four consecutive games at home has been even more difficult, but if Oakland prevails tonight in the fourth team of the series, they will replicate a performance that dates from 1932. In 82 years, the A’s have been unable to defeat Boston at the Coliseum and win four consecutive games, but it looks like they have an excellent opportunity.sportsbetting

On one hand, the offensive is producing enough runs to give starting pitchers a margin for error, on the other hand, the latter throw impeccable balls. Add to this the fact that relievers are finally meeting expectations, and it is easy to understand why punters are so thrilled by backing the hosts at odds exceeding 1.80. Bookmakers are still cautious about overpricing the hosts, and they don’t trust visiting team.

In the first three games of the series, Oakland scored a combined 10 runs, while limiting opponents to just six. It comes as no surprise that the hosts won twice by a single run, so Boston will need a flawless performance from Jon Lester to salvage an otherwise disappointing road series. Luckily for them, the starting pitcher has posted some incredible numbers against the A’s and gave them no chance in his only start against Oakland this season.

He will be opposed by Tommy Milone who has an earned run average of 3.56, while winning 5/8 decisions. On the bright side, he is riding a hot streak, having won five games in a row and limited opponents to less than two runs per game over the stretch. He doesn’t have too many pleasant memories from his last encounter with Boston, being tagged for six earned runs, all of them homers.

This is not going to be one of those games in which one team steamrolls past the opponent, but all that Oakland needs tonight is a narrow margin victory. Matching a record that is 82 years old would be a great accomplishment for the West division leaders who’d expand their advantage over the Los Angeles Angels to 8 victories. Even though the season is only half way through, it looks like the A’s will be one of the first teams to qualify for the playoffs and a serious contender for the World Series.
